Getting your UAE driving license
Whether you are a new resident applying for your first UAE license, converting a foreign license, or preparing for the RTA driving test, the process follows a clear sequence: eligibility check, eye test, theory exam, driving lessons at an approved school, and the final road test.
Some nationalities qualify for direct license conversion without a driving test. The list of eligible countries is updated periodically by the RTA. If your country is not on the list, you will need to complete the full licensing process through an approved driving school.

What is the minimum age to drive in the UAE?
You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a driving license and drive a car in the UAE. Motorcycle licenses require a minimum age of 17.
How long does it take to get a UAE driving license?
The full process (eye test, theory, driving lessons, road test) typically takes 2–4 months. Direct conversion for eligible nationalities can be completed in 1–2 weeks.
Can I drive in the UAE with a foreign license?
Visitors can drive on a valid foreign license or international driving permit for up to 6 months. Residents must convert or obtain a UAE license within 6 months of receiving their residency visa.
