Fog Driving Guide — UAE Roads 2026

How to drive safely in UAE fog: speed, lights, distance, RTA fog alerts and what to do in near-zero visibility.

When fog occurs in the UAE

Fog is common in the UAE from October to March, mainly during early morning hours (5–9 AM). It is densest in inland and desert areas — the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain highway, the E11 between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and the E44 through Sharjah and Fujairah are frequently affected. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issues fog alerts via SMS and social media.

How to drive safely in fog

  1. Reduce speed — slow down well below the posted limit. Speed cameras remain active.
  2. Use fog lights — switch on front fog lights (and rear fog lights if visibility is below 100 m). Do not use high beam — it reflects off the fog and worsens visibility.
  3. Increase following distance — leave at least 4–5 seconds between you and the car ahead.
  4. Use road markings — follow the white lane markings and reflective cat's eyes to stay in your lane.
  5. Do not stop on the road — if visibility is too low, exit the highway at the next ramp or pull into a safe area with hazard lights on.
  6. Avoid overtaking — stay in your lane and avoid sudden lane changes.

Pile-up risk

Multi-vehicle pile-ups are the most serious fog-related incident in the UAE. Maintaining a large following gap is the single most effective prevention measure.

Fog lights vs headlights

Fog lights

Mounted low on the bumper. Produce a flat, wide beam that cuts under the fog layer. Use whenever visibility drops below 200 m.

High beam

Angled upward. Light bounces off fog droplets and reflects back into your eyes, reducing visibility further. Never use high beam in fog.

Fog driving — FAQ

Is it illegal to drive without fog lights in fog in the UAE?

Yes. UAE traffic law requires fog lights when visibility is significantly reduced. Driving without proper lighting in poor visibility can result in a fine of AED 500 and 4 black points.

What should I do if I cannot see the car in front?

Slow down to 40–60 km/h, use your fog lights, keep your window slightly open to listen for traffic, and follow the road markings. If visibility drops below 50 m, pull off the road safely.

Does the UAE reduce speed limits during fog?

Police and RTA may activate variable speed limit signs on some highways. Follow electronic signage and NCM weather alerts during fog events.
