International Driving Permit — UAE (2026)
When you need an IDP in the UAE, how to apply, validity and driving on a foreign licence in the GCC.
What is an International Driving Permit?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your national driving license into multiple languages. It is not a standalone license — you must always carry your original license alongside the IDP. In the UAE, an IDP allows visitors to rent and drive a car for up to 6 months.
Key rule
An IDP is only valid when accompanied by your original national driving license. It does not replace or extend the original license. When you need an IDP in the UAE
You need an IDP if
- Your license is in a language the rental company cannot read
- Your country is not on the GCC-recognised license list
- You plan to cross borders (some GCC countries require it)
You may not need one if
- Your license is from a GCC country
- Your license is in English or Arabic
- You hold a valid UAE driving license
How to get an IDP
Apply for an IDP in your home country before travelling. In most countries, the automobile association (e.g. AA, AAA, ADAC) issues IDPs. The process usually takes a few days and costs between USD 15–50. You will need passport photos, a completed form and a copy of your current driving license.
UAE residents can obtain an IDP through the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE). It is valid for one year from the date of issue.
