Which countries qualify for direct license transfer in the UAE, the documents needed and the step-by-step RTA conversion process.
Direct conversion countries
Holders of driving licenses from the following countries can convert to a UAE license without taking a driving test. You still need to pass an eye test and submit documents.

- Get your foreign license translated into Arabic by a legal translation office.
- Complete an eye test at an authorised optician.
- Visit an RTA customer happiness centre with your documents.
- Pay the conversion fee (approximately AED 570–870 depending on emirate and license class).
- Receive your UAE driving license — usually same day or within a few days.
If your country is not on the list
If your nationality is not eligible for direct conversion, you must complete the full UAE driving license process: open a traffic file at an approved driving school, take lessons, pass the theory test, yard test and final road test. Your existing driving experience may reduce the number of lessons required.

Do I need to take any test for direct conversion?
You must pass an eye test. No theory or driving test is required for nationalities on the direct conversion list.
How long does the conversion take?
Typically 1–3 working days from submitting your documents, assuming no issues with your paperwork.
What if my foreign license has expired?
Most RTA offices require a valid (not expired) foreign license. Check with your nearest RTA centre if your license recently expired — some offices accept licenses expired within 6 months.
